Access & Use Policy

HathiTrust is a collaborative library initiative. Users are encouraged to cite and link to digital content and are free to do so without asking for permission. Depending on the source of the digitized work, licenses or other contractual terms may restrict further distribution or other uses. Please consult the “Rights” statement included in the Book Viewer for each item for volume-specific information. You need to make your own assessment of the copyright or other legal concerns related to uses beyond those provided by HathiTrust for particular works.

The possible Access and Use statements that apply to each book are listed below. More information about copyright determinations in HathiTrust can be found on the Copyright page.

Use: HathiTrust does not have authority to grant or deny permissions to use images from volumes that are in the public domain or open access.

Attribution: Where uses of public domain volumes are permitted according to the terms below, or appropriate permissions have been secured from rights holders, we request that HathiTrust be attributed as the source of the digital images with the addition of “courtesy of HathiTrust” to the citation, and that links to the digital images be included where possible.

Metadata: Under HathiTrust Digital Library’s (HTDL) Metadata Sharing Policy, independent users, member institutions, and other third parties are free to harvest (for example, through our OAI feed or the HathiFiles), modify and/or otherwise make use of any metadata contained in HTDL unless restricted by contractual obligations residing with the parties that have contributed the metadata (“Depositing Institutions”) to HTDL.  Furthermore, HTDL provides no warranties on the data made available through any sharing mechanisms. Use of the data is undertaken at the user’s own risk. Any contributions made by HTDL to the metadata in the repository have been placed into the public domain by HTDL via a CC0 Public Domain Dedication.
