Outage Resolved: Incomplete Search Results

April 9, 2024 RESOLVED: The issue causing incomplete search results in “Full Text,” “Full Text & All Fields,” as well as many “Search Within a Collection” queries has been resolved. Dates of outage: March 28th, 2024 through approximately April 4, 2024

Users will get incomplete results when submitting search terms using the “Full Text and All Fields” and “Only Full Text” options in the search. About half of the HathiTrust collection is unavailable for searching through these options. Collections with over 1,000 items will also not be fully searchable for the duration of this outage. 

We believe this issue has been occurring since approximately March 14. It is therefore likely that “Full Text,” “Full Text & All Fields,” as well as many “Search Within a Collection” queries since that date have returned incomplete search results. This means there may be items in the HathiTrust Digital Library that match your query, but they are not included in your search results. Once the issue is resolved, your query should return complete search results. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause in your research process.

What you can do: 

• You can still search the entire collection using any of the other options (Title, Author, Subject, ISBN/ISSN, Publisher, Series Title) which allow you to search within the catalog records describing HathiTrust texts.
• You can also open an individual text and search within that text alone. 

What happened: On March 28, 2024, we discovered that about half of the HathiTrust collection is not full-text searchable due to an indexing failure. Large personal collections are impacted because they rely on the same search index. We are investigating the source of this problem and working to correct it as quickly as possible. This issue only impacts the ability to search. The HathiTrust collection is still safely preserved and maintained.
